IP Telephony System

A PABX (private branch exchange) or phone system is a private telephone network used by businesses for internal and external communication using different communication channels, such as, ISDN, Voice over IP, and analog. A PBX phone system allows businesses to have more phones than physical phone lines and also offers free calling between its users.

The major advantage of a PBX phone system is that it prevents the need of having a separate phone line for each user that is connected to the central office of a telephone company.

The PBX system is owned by an enterprise itself and includes components like, a computer with a memory to manage the call switch, telephone trunk lines, network of lines within the PBX, and a switchboard or a console

IP Phones

SIP phones or VoIP (voice-over-internet-protocol) phones use the open standard SIP for setting up and managing phone calls. The voice on a SIP or IP phone is transmitted over an IP-based network with the help of an open standard called as RTP.

It looks like a regular phone, but the hardware is built using IP-aware components to connect with an IT network using Wi-Fi or regular Ethernet cables.

A SIP phone also has an integrated mini hub through which it can share the network connection with a laptop or desktop.

This way, it waves off the need of an additional network point. Along with managing phone calls for a rich user experience, SIP phones also include other common features, such as, call hold, speaker phone, call transfer, caller ID, etc.
